Guidelines
The application period has ended.
Welcome to the Camargo Foundation online application system. By completing and submitting this form, you are applying for a residential fellowship at the Camargo Foundation, Cassis, France for either the Fall or Spring semester.
Please read through this application carefully to understand all the required materials. When you have completed this application, you should submit it before the deadline of January 12. This application will then be read by one or more selection committees.
Candidates are normally contacted in April and May.
Language requirements
Applications and all supporting materials (including the project description, supporting materials and letters of reference) must be in:
- English or French for applications whose primary category is Academic
- English only for applications whose primary category is Creative Writing, Music Composition, or Visual Arts.
In the interests of the Camargo interdisciplinary, multicultural community, candidates must be able to communicate well in English. Knowledge of the French language is also very useful.
The Online Application
Using your login and password, you can return as often as you need to update or make changes to your application.
Blue stars indicate required fields. By clicking on the question mark next to a field, you will find an explanation of what information is required.
Your Home Page provides the current status of each section of your application. Please save the information you enter on each tab before moving to the next, to ensure your data is retained by the system.
Only applications that have been submitted online will be considered by the Camargo Foundation.
Before submitting your application, make sure that all sections are complete and accurate. The system will not allow you to submit an incomplete application. Once you have submitted your application, you can no longer make changes to it.
Below you will find information on the online application, section by section.
Contact
The Contact information page includes your name, home and work addresses, and internet addresses to sites related to your work (optional). Please ensure that the information on this page is current, and that you have specified whether you prefer to be contacted at home or at work.
Bear in mind that the Camargo Foundation notifies all applicants in April and May. If your contact details change after submission, please contact apply@camargofoundation.org.
Project
The Project page includes the title of your proposed project, primary and secondary (optional) categories, project summary, and project description.
Applicants are required to choose a primary category for their project. If applicable to their project, they may also indicate a secondary category. The system will require that materials related to the primary and secondary category be uploaded in support of your application.
Applicants who choose to indicate a secondary category should ensure that their project description and references represent or address both disciplines as much as possible, so their application can be given proper consideration by the appropriate selection committees.
The project summary has a maximum length of 50 words.
The project description has a maximum length of 1000 words long.
Academic projects must have a connection to France or Francophone cultures. Artistic projects do not have this requirement.
Research should be sufficiently advanced not to require resources unavailable in the Marseille-Cassis Aix region. These requirements affirm the Foundation's identity and mission as a center for scholars and artists well into the writing/creating phases of their projects as opposed to a research facility.
Academic and independent scholars are asked to include one or two paragraphs in their project description locating their project conceptually and/or bibliographically in the context of the most important works available in the field. Translation projects are welcome. If the project is to translate a creative writing piece, the applicant should select Creative Writing as the primary category. If the project is to translate a scholarly work, then the applicant should select Academic as the primary category.
Collaborative projects are welcome, but only one fellowship will be awarded to one individual per project.
The Camargo Foundation does not consider projects for film scripts. Play scripts are welcome.
References
Letters of recommendation should be current and written specifically for the Camargo Foundation Fellowship Application by individuals familiar with the applicant's professional work. Appropriate letter writers include department heads, thesis directors, and other professional colleagues.
Letters of recommendation for academic fellowships may be written in English or French. Letters of recommendation for creative writing, music composition, and visual arts fellowships must be in English.
The online application system allows applicants to invite recommenders to submit their letters of recommendation online, by generating an automated email invitation from the contact details entered by the applicant, to which the recommender can reply at their leisure. Alternatively, recommenders may provide letters of recommendation via postal mail. Letters that are not provided online must either be collected by applicants in sealed, signed envelopes, or be sent directly to the Camargo Foundation by the recommenders. Faxed letters are not accepted. All letters of recommendation must be submitted online or arrive at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France, no later than the deadline: January 12.
Only complete applications will be reviewed by the selection panels.
Residency
You are asked to provide information pertaining to your residency, including the preferred semester and names of accompanying partner, spouse or children. Applicants are asked to bear in mind that flexibility in the choice of semester, all other factors being equal, may increase the chances of being offered a fellowship.
Fellows must actually be in residence at the Foundation. This stipulation does not preclude absences during weekends and recesses that coincide with those of the French schools in the Marseilles-Aix-Cassis area. Only spouse/adult partner and dependent minor children may accompany applicants for short stays or the duration of the residency. Because of physical arrangements at the Camargo Foundation, accompanying children must be at least six years old upon arrival, and enrolled in and attend school. Only those whose names appear on this application form may be in residence, unless special authorization has been granted by the Executive Director.
The knowledge of who will accompany the fellow will not be taken into account during the selection of fellows, but will be used in assigning apartments. Please be aware that the Camargo Foundation offers 13 furnished apartments of various sizes; most are studio/one-bedroom apartments, and only a few have 2 or 3 bedrooms.
Materials
The primary category will indicate the number and kind of required materials. To be able to provide materials in your secondary category, please ensure you have specified this on the Project page. Follow the instructions on this page. CVs, bibliographies (for academic applicants) and work samples should be uploaded whenever possible. Materials are also accepted via postal mail, but the Camargo Foundation prefers them to be uploaded directly.
Academics must submit a one-page project bibliography with their application. This bibliography should list the works that have informed their research. A list of the applicant's own publications may be included in the CV. Candidates in creative writing, music composition, and visual arts (painting, sculpting, photography, video arts, filmmaking, and new media arts) must submit samples of their work.
While most supporting materials can be uploaded, scores, recordings and films can also be sent by postal mail. All materials sent by postal mail must arrive at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France, by the January 12 deadline. Late materials will not be accepted. Only complete applications will be considered for Fellowships. Applicants who mail hard copy materials in support of their application and wish them to be returned, must provide a self-addressed envelope and international postage vouchers for the appropriate amount.
